Before Two-Digit Addition — Prerequisites

Two conditions must be in place before two-digit addition will make sense. First: automatic basic fact recall. If your child is still calculating 6+3 rather than retrieving it, multi-digit addition will overload their working memory before they even get to the column procedure. Second: solid place value understanding — your child should be able to tell you what each digit in a two-digit number represents without hesitation. Beginning Two-Digit (No Regrouping)

Start with vertical format using pre-drawn columns or graph paper. The first goal is alignment: tens under tens, ones under ones.
