Why Sixth Grade Division Prepares Students for Pre-Algebra

By sixth grade, division extends to decimals and fractions and is applied to ratios and unit rates. Division is essential for understanding slope, density, and speed in pre-algebra. A child who does not understand decimal and fraction division will struggle significantly in middle school math.

Our division worksheets build fluency with all division operations. The sixth grade math hub offers more resources for a complete curriculum.

Key Division Strategies for Sixth Grade

Master advanced division with these strategies

Decimal Division

Multiply divisor and dividend by power of 10 to make divisor whole. Then divide as usual. For 6.25 ÷ 0.5: multiply both by 10 = 62.5 ÷ 5 = 12.5.

Fraction Division

Keep, Change, Flip: Keep first fraction, change ÷ to ×, flip second fraction. 2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9.

Unit Rates

Divide to find unit rates. 120 miles in 2 hours = 120 ÷ 2 = 60 miles per hour. $15 for 5 items = 15 ÷ 5 = $3 per item.

Three Difficulty Levels for Division

E

Easy

Long division review and decimal division with divisors that are whole numbers.

M

Medium

Decimal division with decimal divisors and fraction division with like denominators.

H

Hard

Fraction division with mixed numbers, unit rate problems, and word problems.

When 6th Grade Math Needs More Than Worksheets

For some children, the gap is not in practice — it is in the conceptual foundation that makes decimal and fraction operations make sense. If your child cannot explain why dividing by a decimal works or struggles with the "Keep, Change, Flip" rule, worksheets alone will not bridge that gap. Our Pre-Algebra Foundations course (grades 6-8) covers the full progression from operations through ratios, percentages, and introductory algebra. You can also browse all available courses and planners on the resources page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about teaching sixth grade division

What division skills should sixth graders have?

By the end of sixth grade, students should divide multi-digit numbers fluently, divide decimals to thousandths, divide fractions and mixed numbers, and solve division word problems involving ratios and percentages.

How do I teach decimal division in sixth grade?

If dividing by a decimal, multiply both divisor and dividend by a power of 10 to make the divisor a whole number. Then divide as usual. Place decimal point in quotient directly above the decimal in the dividend.

How do I teach fraction division?

Teach "Keep, Change, Flip": Keep the first fraction, change division to multiplication, flip the second fraction (reciprocal). For 2/3 ÷ 3/4 = 2/3 × 4/3 = 8/9.

How does division connect to ratios and percentages?

Division is essential for finding unit rates and percentages. A unit rate of 120 miles in 2 hours means 120 ÷ 2 = 60 miles per hour. Percent means per hundred, so 25% means 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25.

How many division problems should my sixth grader do daily?

6-8 division problems per day is enough. Mix types: decimal division, fraction division, and word problems. Focus on accuracy and understanding.

How do I know if my child has mastered sixth grade division?

Mastery means your child can: 1) divide decimals accurately, 2) divide fractions and mixed numbers, 3) apply division to ratio and unit rate problems, 4) solve division word problems, and 5) explain the procedures.
